WWE Drops Shocking John Cena Title Plans—Fans Left Stunned

WWE almost pulled the trigger on one of the biggest title moments of John Cena’s career—but in a shocking twist, those plans have been scrapped.

At WWE Crown Jewel: Perth, John Cena is set to collide with longtime rival AJ Styles in a dream showdown. The match was confirmed by Triple H after weeks of hype on social media, but according to new reports, it was originally supposed to be much bigger.

Cena Was Set To Win the Intercontinental Championship

On The Dirty Sheets Wrestling Informer podcast, insider Billi Bhatti revealed that WWE’s original plan had Cena winning the WWE Intercontinental Championship from AJ Styles at Crown Jewel.

“Crown Jewel was originally supposed to be a show where John Cena won the Intercontinental Championship from AJ Styles,” Bhatti said. “But once that plan was dropped, we never saw AJ win the title from Dominik Mysterio, which completely changed the direction of the story.”

Bhatti added that the idea was to eventually have Dominik Mysterio beat Cena for the title – a massive rub for Rey Mysterio’s son that could have elevated him to the next level.

Bully Ray Pitched Cena vs. Dominik Instead

WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray also weighed in on the situation during Busted Open Radio, saying he loved the idea of a Cena vs. Dominik feud.

“I like the idea of Dom vs. Cena because Dom has so much heat,” Bully Ray said. “Imagine Dom cheating and actually beating Cena. The heat would be nuclear – it could carry Dom for the next year.”

He even suggested a wild finish: “Have Cena slip on a banana peel, Dom gets the win. It’s not about protecting Cena – it’s about making Dominik a bigger star.”

What’s Next for Cena?

While the Intercontinental Championship plan may have been dropped, Cena vs. Styles is still locked in for Crown Jewel: Perth. But fans can’t help but wonder – did WWE just waste the perfect chance to make Dominik Mysterio a megastar while giving Cena one last historic title run?
