Dominik Mysterio Losing the IC Title to John Cena Was a Turning Point, Says Former WWE Champion

Dominik Mysterio’s long Intercontinental Championship run finally came to an end on RAW, but according to former WWE Champion Big E, the loss might be one of the most important moments of Dom’s career.

Dominik had been carrying the IC title since WrestleMania 41, where he shocked everyone by winning a chaotic Fatal 4-Way match featuring Bron Breakker, Finn Bálor, and Penta. Since then, “Dirty Dom” has grown into one of WWE’s most talked-about young stars.

But on Monday night in Boston, everything changed.

John Cena—appearing in front of his hometown crowd for the final time—was confronted by Dominik. What began as a typical segment quickly escalated into an Intercontinental Championship match. And in front of an arena full of roaring fans, Cena defeated Dominik to capture the IC title for the first time in his legendary career, officially completing his long-awaited WWE Grand Slam.

Big E Praises Dominik: “This Was Huge for Him”

After the match, Big E spoke about the moment on the RAW Recap podcast, and he didn’t hold back his praise for the young star.

“I know he lost, but I love this for Dom,” Big E said. “We’ve only got a few weeks left of John Cena’s career, and Dominik isn’t in some quick squash. He went toe-to-toe with Cena. He held his own, he got mic time, and he proved he belongs.”

Big E went on to say that while calling it a “passing of the torch” might be too strong, the match was definitely a major sign from WWE that Dominik is someone they see big potential in.

“He didn’t walk out with the title, but moments like this matter,” he continued. “When Dom becomes a world champion—maybe a year from now, maybe two—we’ll look back at this match as one of the key stepping stones.”

What’s Next for Dominik Mysterio?

Even though he’s no longer the Intercontinental Champion, Dominik’s momentum isn’t slowing down. WWE officials reportedly see him as one of the company’s future main-event stars, and early rumors suggest he might get another shot at Cena at Survivor Series.

And with the way his career is trending, a World Championship run doesn’t seem far away.

Dominik may have lost the title, but he walked away with something far more valuable: the stamp of approval from a legend and the trust of the company.
