Drew McIntyre’s Dark Turn Feels Too Real—Former WWE Star Reveals What’s Fueling His Best Run Yet

Drew McIntyre may be positioned as a villain on WWE television, but the reaction from fans tells a very different story. Since dethroning Cody Rhodes to become the Undisputed WWE Champion, “The Scottish Warrior” has felt more authentic — and more dangerous — than ever before.

According to former WWE star David Otunga, that’s no accident.

While speaking on TMZ’s Inside The Ring podcast, Otunga praised McIntyre’s current run and pointed to something deeper driving the character’s edge. He explained that Drew isn’t just playing angry — he’s channeling genuine frustration into his on-screen persona, and it’s making all the difference.

Otunga noted that McIntyre is one of his favorite characters in WWE right now, adding that the realism behind Drew’s emotions is what makes the performance click. Blurring the lines between real life and storyline, he said, is when wrestling works best — and McIntyre is doing that at a masterful level.

That sentiment was echoed by WWE Hall of Famer Booker T, who recently weighed in on McIntyre’s championship victory on his Hall of Fame podcast. Booker made it clear he believes Drew has always looked like “the guy,” saying McIntyre checks every box a top WWE star should.

While acknowledging Cody Rhodes’ strong title reign, Booker T felt the timing was right for a change. In his view, McIntyre earned this moment, and now is the time for him to finally get the kind of run many believe he’s long deserved.

Booker also praised the chaotic finish of the match, calling it completely believable given the stipulations. He highlighted Jacob Fatu’s involvement, noting that Fatu has no alliances and no hesitation — making him a serious wildcard going forward.

In fact, Booker T didn’t stop there. He openly floated the idea of Drew McIntyre vs. Jacob Fatu as a potential blockbuster title match, calling it a marquee showdown that could easily belong on the WrestleMania stage. According to Booker, the two hard-hitting stars have the chemistry to deliver a physical, no-nonsense fight that defines what pro wrestling is all about.

With real emotion driving his character and major challengers lining up, Drew McIntyre’s reign already feels different — and if the early reactions are any indication, it may just be the most compelling chapter of his WWE career yet.
