Rusev Finally Reveals The Real Reason He Came Back To WWE—And It Wasn’t Just About Money
After years away from the company, Rusev has finally opened up about what truly pulled him back to WWE in 2025—and according to him, it had everything to do with competition, passion, and unfinished business.
Speaking during an interview on Insight With Chris Van Vliet hosted by Chris Van Vliet, the former champion explained that the current roster depth and the chance to return to a full wrestling schedule played a huge role in his decision.
Rusev made his shocking return on the April 21, 2025, episode of Monday Night RAW, attacking members of Alpha Academy in his first appearance in nearly five years. For him, the goal was simple—get back into the ring and test himself against what he calls one of the most stacked locker rooms in years.
He also admitted he missed the demanding, travel-heavy lifestyle that defined traditional wrestling. Early in his career, constant touring meant performing in different cities almost every night, something he believes helped him sharpen his skills faster than anything else.

Before returning, Rusev’s journey took several unexpected turns. After being released during the pandemic in 2020, he built a strong online fanbase streaming on Twitch before eventually signing with AEW. Initially planning only a short stay, he ended up signing a longer contract before eventually deciding WWE still felt like home.
Despite stepping away from TV after a match with Jey Uso in late 2025, WWE has recently hinted at a new direction for him—potentially involving rising powerhouse Oba Femi.
During his first run back, Rusev also reignited his rivalry with Sheamus, culminating in a brutal Donnybrook Brawl at Clash in Paris, a match that reminded fans exactly why he remains one of the most physically dominant performers in the business.
With WWE teasing new storylines and major feuds ahead, Rusev’s return may just be entering its most important chapter yet—and this time, he looks determined to prove he never lost a step.
