History Will Repeat Itself: Cody Rhodes Vows to Hand Randy Orton the Same WrestleMania Heartbreak He Suffered in 2009

Cody Rhodes isn’t just predicting victory at WrestleMania 42—he’s rewriting history to prove it.

With just weeks until his Undisputed WWE Championship showdown against Randy Orton, Rhodes is drawing a direct line from the present back to 2009, and the message is clear: Orton’s fate was sealed 17 years ago.

Appearing on Busted Open Radio, Rhodes acknowledged the widespread comparisons between the current version of Orton and the merciless force who terrorized WWE in 2009. But rather than fear that version of The Viper, Rhodes used it as a warning.

“A lot of people have referenced 2009 Randy, where he just ate everything in his path and was vicious and took no prisoners,” Rhodes said. “And I was there. So being there, I got a firsthand view at what happened. You’re right. He was the most vicious he’d ever been. He was truly becoming the apex predator, the legend killer, the youngest world champion. All of that becomes an amalgamation into one. But he also went to WrestleMania, wrestled Triple H for this title and lost. And I think it’s a similar outcome going into WrestleMania 42.”

Rhodes didn’t stop at the prediction. He took aim at the contrast between his own reign and the kind of champion Orton has historically been—and even the era of Roman Reigns.

“The bell is who decides who the champion is,” Rhodes said. “When Roman had this historic reign, you got both. He was doing everything and then he was doing nothing, and we’d see him when we’d see him, and there was a specialness to it.”

The two will collide in the Night 1 main event of WrestleMania 42 on April 18 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, with Rhodes promising that history won’t just echo—it will repeat.
