John Cena Just Announced a WWE Backlash Return—But Fans Will Be Furious Why He Won’t Fight

John Cena is coming back to WWE much sooner than anyone expected. But before you get excited about seeing him step into the ring again, you need to hear the fine print.

The 17-time world champion officially announced on X that he will appear at the Backlash 2026 premium live event on May 9 in Tampa. Cena promised to deliver what he calls “history-making news” that will change the WWE experience for both superstars and fans.

“I can’t promise it’ll be perfect,” Cena wrote, “but I can promise it will change the WWE experience.”

That sounds thrilling. But here is where loyal fans might feel let down.

Despite the buzz, Cena will not be wrestling at Backlash. During his ongoing farewell tour, the future Hall of Famer has repeatedly stated that he will never make an in-ring return again—not even for a short segment. He has committed to appearing only in a suit for all televised events, just as he did while hosting both nights of Wrestlemania 42.

So what will Cena actually do in Tampa? The strongest theory points to him introducing Danhausen’s mystery partner for a tag team match against The Miz and Kit Wilson. That means Cena could unveil a new superstar or announce the return of a former star, but he will not be lacing up his boots.

His last match already happened. Cena lost via submission to Gunther at the December 13th Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Backlash card is stacking up. Roman Reigns will defend his World Heavyweight Championship against Jacob Fatu in the main event. Seth Rollins takes on Bron Breakker. IYO Sky faces Asuka. And newly crowned United States Champion Trick Williams puts his title on the line against Sami Zayn.

One notable name missing from the lineup is CM Punk. He is confirmed to miss Backlash entirely after losing his World Heavyweight Championship to Roman Reigns at Wrestlemania 42. Fans will likely have to wait until SummerSlam or even Wrestlemania 43 to see Punk face Cody Rhodes.

So yes, John Cena is returning to WWE television on May 9. But if you are hoping for one more match, you will leave disappointed. The man himself made sure of that.
