CM Punk Gets Real About John Cena’s Upcoming Retirement: “We Don’t Often Get to Say Goodbye to Our Heroes”

John Cena’s retirement is just weeks away, and the entire WWE Universe is feeling the weight of the moment — including one of his greatest rivals and respected peers, CM Punk.

For over two decades, Cena has been more than just a superstar. He became the face of WWE, a global pop-culture icon, and the entry point for millions of young fans who fell in love with wrestling because of him. From his unmatched work ethic to his countless charity appearances, the leader of the Cenation shaped an entire generation.

Even at 47, Cena proved he could still hang with the best this year, putting on performances that reminded everyone why he’s a 17-time world champion. But now, he’s ready to close this chapter with dignity. His final match is officially set for December 13, during Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C.

Before he walks away, Cena has a few more big moments ahead. He’ll wrestle at Survivor Series on November 29, where he’ll once again face Dominik Mysterio — the same superstar he defeated to capture the Intercontinental Championship and finally complete the coveted Grand Slam. It was yet another milestone in a career overflowing with history.

Inside the locker room, Cena’s impact goes far beyond titles. He’s been a leader, a mentor, and a genuine example of professionalism. Many WWE stars are openly emotional as they prepare to say goodbye to an era that shaped so many lives.

One of those voices is CM Punk.

Speaking on Up & Adams, the current World Heavyweight Champion compared Cena to hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, praising his longevity and influence:

“Cena is our Wayne Gretzky — he held it down for a very, very long time. Watching him wrap it up with such style, grace, and dignity… it’s been a real treat. We rarely get the chance to say goodbye to our sports heroes in real time.”

Punk also emphasized how rare it is for a wrestler to retire on their own terms:

“Especially with how physical this sport is, everything can end in an instant. He’s leaving with his health, and that’s a blessing.”

As December approaches, fans and fellow wrestlers alike are preparing for one of the most emotional farewells in WWE history. John Cena’s retirement won’t just mark the end of a career — it will close the book on a legacy that helped define modern WWE.
