Drew McIntyre Reveals the Terrible WWE Character That Almost Ruined His Career

Drew McIntyre may be one of WWE’s biggest stars today — a two-time WWE Champion and one of the most respected names in the business — but things could have gone very differently for the Scottish Warrior. In fact, if WWE’s original plan for his debut had gone through, fans might never have taken him seriously at all.

During a recent chat with No-Contest Wrestling, McIntyre opened up about a truly bizarre idea WWE once had for him… and it’s so bad, you might cringe just hearing it.

“They wanted me to be The Runway Man,” McIntyre revealed, laughing nervously as he recalled the pitch. “John Laurinaitis told me I’d have my own model runway entrance. I’d strut down the ramp like a fashion model… and I just thought, ‘Oh no, my dreams are over.’”

Yes, The Runway Man. Imagine the 6-foot-5 Scottish powerhouse we know today — instead of swinging a Claymore, he’d be striking poses under a spotlight.

Laurinaitis reportedly loved the idea and even brought it to Vince McMahon himself. But thankfully, McIntyre’s visible discomfort during the meeting might have saved him.

“Vince looked at me and asked what I thought,” McIntyre said. “I told him, ‘Whatever you need me to do, I’ll make it work,’ but he could tell I wasn’t thrilled. Thankfully, he read my face and scrapped the idea.”

That decision changed everything. Instead of walking the ramp as a parody model, McIntyre was introduced by McMahon as The Chosen One — a future world champion handpicked for greatness.

Of course, his early run didn’t quite live up to that hype. Despite capturing the Intercontinental and Tag Team Championships, the “Chosen One” gimmick never truly connected with fans. McIntyre eventually fell into the comedic 3MB faction alongside Heath Slater and Jinder Mahal, before being released from WWE in 2014.

But that setback turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Over the next few years, McIntyre rebuilt himself on the independent circuit, winning titles across the globe — including the TNA World Championship — and proving he was far more than a failed WWE experiment. When he returned to WWE in 2017, he was a changed man, both inside and outside the ring.

Since then, McIntyre’s rise has been nothing short of remarkable:
🏆 2-time WWE Champion
🏆 World Heavyweight Champion
🏆 NXT Champion
🏆 2020 Royal Rumble Winner

And now, he’s back in the main event picture once again — set to challenge Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship this Saturday, November 1st, at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Salt Lake City.

What a journey — from nearly becoming “The Runway Man” to standing at the top of WWE once again. Sometimes, all it takes is one “No” to change your destiny.
