🔥 “I Never Saw Myself in ”WWE”—Gunther Admits He Once Doubted His Own Fit Before Becoming a WWE Mega-Star
Gunther’s rise to the very top of WWE looks inevitable now—but surprisingly, it almost never happened.
The two-time World Heavyweight Champion recently opened up about his early doubts, revealing that he wasn’t even sure WWE was the right place for his hard-hitting, no-nonsense wrestling style. Speaking on The Masked Man Show, Gunther admitted there was a time when he believed WWE simply wasn’t built for someone like him.
Before debuting on the main roster in 2022, Gunther dominated WWE’s developmental system and carved out a legendary reign as the longest and most respected NXT UK Champion ever. Once he arrived on Raw, his impact was instant. He captured the Intercontinental Championship and shattered The Honky Tonk Man’s long-standing record, becoming the longest-reigning IC Champion in WWE history.
That historic run was only the beginning.
Gunther soon added the World Heavyweight Championship to his résumé—twice. Even after setbacks, including title losses, injuries, and grueling battles against stars like Jey Uso at WrestleMania 41, he always found his way back to the top. His most jaw-dropping moment came when he defeated John Cena in Cena’s farewell match on December 13 at Saturday Night’s Main Event, forcing Cena to tap out for the first time in 21 years.

Yet behind all that dominance was real uncertainty.
Gunther confessed that he delayed signing with WWE because he never pictured himself fitting into the company’s system. At one point, he believed Japan was where his style truly belonged. WWE, in his mind, wasn’t even part of the plan.
But fate had other ideas.
Looking back now, Gunther says his success proves how unpredictable wrestling—and life—can be. What once felt like a bad match turned into the perfect fit, largely because he offers something different from everyone else on the roster.
Today, Gunther isn’t just surviving in WWE—he’s redefining what a modern WWE champion looks like. And the man who once doubted his place now stands as one of the most feared and respected in-ring performers in the entire industry.
