WWE Reportedly Cashes In Huge Payday to Host John Cena’s Emotional Final Match—And It’s Not in Boston!

John Cena’s legendary career is officially counting down to its last chapter, but the location of his farewell has stunned fans everywhere.

The 17-time world champion, who has carried WWE on his back for over two decades, is set to wrestle his final match this December. For months, the expectation was simple—Cena’s last stand would be in his hometown of Boston, Massachusetts. After all, what better way to close out a career than in front of your own people?

But WWE had other plans. According to Sports Illustrated’s Jon Alba, Washington, D.C. swooped in and outbid Boston for the rights to host Cena’s last match—reportedly dropping a jaw-dropping $7 million package to secure it. Over $1 million of that is tied directly to Cena’s final bout as part of a massive WWE weekend takeover.

The showdown will go down at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13th, live from Capital One Arena. Cena’s Boston faithful won’t be left out completely—the city will host his final hometown appearance in November.

“WWE just announced John Cena will make his final appearance in Boston in November, which means he will not be there for his last match in December,” Alba revealed. “Boston went hard for it, but WWE wanted the city to cover costs it hadn’t in the past.”

In a twist that only adds fuel to the drama, reports suggest that U.S. President Donald Trump — a longtime WWE ally—played a role in helping Washington secure Cena’s swan song.

The End Of An Era

From his 2002 debut against Kurt Angle to becoming the face of WWE through the Ruthless Aggression and PG eras, Cena’s resume is untouchable:

  • 17-time World Champion
  • 5-time U.S. Champion
  • 4-time Tag Team Champion
  • 2-time Royal Rumble winner

He shocked the wrestling world at Money in the Bank 2024, announcing his retirement tour and setting December 2025 as his official farewell. His final SmackDown match came just days ago against Sami Zayn — cut short by a shocking Brock Lesnar interference.

“I officially announce my retirement from WWE,” Cena declared. “This farewell doesn’t end tonight… the 2025 Royal Rumble will be my last, the 2025 Elimination Chamber will be my last, and WrestleMania 2025 in Las Vegas will be my final WrestleMania.”

Beyond Wrestling

Outside the squared circle, Cena’s star only burned brighter. From blockbuster Hollywood hits like The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker to his unmatched record of granting 650+ Make-A-Wish wishes, Cena has cemented himself as more than just a wrestler—he’s a cultural icon.

And now, as he steps into the ring one last time, the WWE Universe will witness the end of an era—but in Washington, D.C., not Boston.
