John Cena Opens Up About His Big Regret From WWE Crown Jewel: “That One’s On Me”
John Cena has been in the wrestling business for more than two decades, but even a legend makes mistakes — and he openly admitted one from his farewell run.
During his recent appearance on Insight With Chris Van Vliet, Cena revealed that he did not get permission before giving AJ Styles a special introduction at WWE Crown Jewel in Perth, Australia. That intro mentioned Styles’ TNA and Bullet Club legacy — a rare nod inside WWE.
Cena said the gesture came from the heart, but the way he went about it wasn’t right.
⭐ Cena Wanted To Do Something Special — But Kept Everyone In The Dark
According to Cena, nobody backstage knew what he was planning. Not even Alicia Taylor, the announcer, until he literally handed her the paper moments before the intro.
“I just wanted to do something nice for my guy,” Cena said. “But I went about it the wrong way. I went into business for myself. I should’ve gotten permission — and I would’ve gotten permission — but I didn’t tell a single person.”
He explained that the production team was caught off guard, something he never wants to happen because WWE has always trusted him with creative freedom.

⭐ Cena Immediately Apologized After The Match
Right after the match, Cena said the first thing he did was thank AJ Styles. The second thing he did was pull key creative people aside and apologize.
“I messed up. I’m sorry. That will never happen again. I hope you look at my whole career — I’ve always asked for permission — and this once, I ask for forgiveness.”
Cena added that he simply wanted to honor Styles in a unique way, especially during his retirement tour.
⭐ Reflecting On His Final Run
Cena also spoke about his year-long retirement storyline — from WrestleMania all the way to his final upcoming match.
He said he wanted fans to enjoy each moment rather than obsess over spoilers or predictions:
“This last match is going to be the last one. We’ve told the full story. Now when people look back at 2025, I want them to remember the journey and the names of the Superstars who stepped up along the way.”
Cena ended by saying he’s proud of the road he and WWE built together this year — and he wouldn’t change anything… except getting permission for that one intro.
