Netflix Announces Premiere Date for Vince McMahon Docuseries
Netflix has revealed the premiere date for its highly anticipated docuseries on former WWE chairman Vince McMahon. Titled Mr. McMahon, the series will debut on September 25, featuring six one-hour episodes.
The series promises an in-depth exploration of Vince McMahon’s life, charting his rise from transforming WWE into a global entertainment giant to the scandalous sexual misconduct allegations that led to his resignation. According to the official synopsis, Mr. McMahon offers a deep dive into McMahon’s life, legacy, and the enduring impact of his controversial career.
“Culled from over 200 hours of interviews with McMahon himself, his family, business associates, and some of the most iconic figures in wrestling, the series presents an unflinching look at one of the most enigmatic figures in sports entertainment,” the synopsis continues. Filmmaker Chris Smith, known for Tiger King, directs the series, with Bill Simmons of 30 for 30 fame serving as executive producer.
Initially announced in October 2020, the series comes after significant developments in McMahon’s life, including his 2022 retirement amid an investigation by WWE’s board of directors. Despite stepping down, McMahon returned to the company in early 2023 to oversee its sale, resulting in WWE’s merger with UFC under the TKO Group. McMahon later resigned from the TKO board following a lawsuit filed by a former employee accusing him of sexual abuse and trafficking.
Chris Smith shared his vision for the docuseries, stating, “Our goal with Mr. McMahon was to pull back the curtain on the real Vince McMahon, beyond the persona he presented to the public. The story evolved in shocking ways during the four years of production, culminating in some deeply disturbing revelations. The final product is a documentary that offers a nuanced and revealing portrait of a man with a complex legacy.”
Alongside Smith, Bill Simmons and Zara Duffy also serve as executive producers on Mr. McMahon, which is produced by Library Films in collaboration with Ringer Films.
