Paul Heyman has set the record straight on a long-standing WWE debate—and his answer might surprise fans. While many believe Heyman played a major role in discovering Austin Theory, “The Wiseman” has now publicly credited another WWE insider as the true mastermind behind Theory’s rise. And yes, Heyman made sure to give credit where it was due.
Austin Theory officially signed with WWE in August 2019 after catching attention at WrestleMania Axxess a year earlier. His WWE journey hasn’t been smooth sailing — from a Raw call-up in early 2020, to a return to NXT later that year, and finally a main roster resurgence during the 2021 WWE Draft.
Recently, an old photo of Paul Heyman shaking hands with a young Austin Theory (then EVOLVE Champion) resurfaced online, sparking renewed claims that Heyman was responsible for bringing him into WWE. But Heyman quickly shut that down.
Taking to Twitter, Heyman revealed that Gabe Sapolsky — EVOLVE founder and WWE Creative Consultant — deserves full credit for discovering Theory.
Heyman explained that while he didn’t discover Theory, he did play a key role in elevating him. As Executive Director of Raw in 2019–2020, Heyman personally drafted Theory from NXT and placed him into Seth Rollins’ faction — a move that helped accelerate Theory’s growth on the main roster.
Now, years later, Heyman believes Austin Theory has evolved into something special.
According to Heyman, Theory is no longer just a promising prospect — he’s a battle-tested performer with a chip on his shoulder and a future firmly in the spotlight. He even described Theory as a “glimpse of the future” of WWE.
Theory’s recent reveal as the masked man aligned with The Vision has only fueled that narrative. After being sidelined with an undisclosed injury since July, his return has instantly placed him back into a major storyline — and right back into Heyman’s orbit.
With EVOLVE now under WWE ownership and Gabe Sapolsky continuing to shape WWE’s talent pipeline, it’s clear that Austin Theory’s journey is far from over — and according to Paul Heyman, the best may still be ahead.
