“The Billionaires Stole It!” Paul Heyman’s Bold Claim Sparks Brutal Backlash from WWE Veteran

Paul Heyman is one of the smartest minds in professional wrestling history. Having been a staple of the industry since 1987, the current Wise Man of The Bloodline has seen it all, done most of it, and isn’t afraid to take credit for it. However, his latest comments regarding the genesis of WWE’s most celebrated period have rubbed a former writer the wrong way.

In a recent interview, Heyman stirred the pot by asserting that the groundbreaking Attitude Era wasn’t born in the McMahon boardroom, but in the blood-soaked, beat-up arenas of Extreme Championship Wrestling. He claimed that the “billionaires” running WWE saw the buzz ECW was generating and decided to copy the concept to save their business.

While fans love a good origin story, not everyone backstage during that time agrees with Heyman’s revisionist history.

“Where’s Your Attitude Now?” Russo Fires Back

Vince Russo, the polarizing head writer of the Attitude Era, immediately took exception to Heyman’s narrative. Appearing on The Coach and Bro show alongside Jonathan Coachman, Russo didn’t just dispute the claim—he dismantled it, pointing a finger directly at Heyman’s own recent track record.

Russo revealed that his true inspiration came from the rival WCW and Eric Bischoff, not the hardcore product Heyman was producing in Philadelphia.

“People know that Eric Bischoff and I are not the best friends in the world,” Russo admitted. “And I am telling you, I was inspired by what he was doing at WCW.”

But Russo saved his most cutting remarks for Heyman’s current position within WWE. If Paul Heyman truly holds the secret recipe for “attitude,” Russo questioned why fans haven’t seen a hint of it during his long tenure with the global juggernaut.

“Paul, where’s your attitude been the last 20 years? You’re talking about attitude,” Russo jabbed. “Where has your attitude been since you’ve been employed by the WWE? That’s a joke, bro. There has been no attitude in the WWE programming for 20 years.”

Russo didn’t stop there. He took a shot at Heyman’s controversial tenure as the head of ECW, subtly mocking the financial struggles that defined the promotion.

“If you’re the boss at ECW, Paul… I don’t want to say owner because he didn’t pay anybody. If he was the boss… he’s had the opportunity to make a difference in the WWE for the last 20 years. Where’s the attitude, Paul?”

The debate highlights a classic wrestling war: is the Attitude Era defined by the crash-and-burn style of ECW or the mainstream competition between WWE and WCW? For Russo, the answer is clear—and it doesn’t involve Paul Heyman’s unpaid invoices.
