“Sheamus Admits Painful Career Regret: ‘It Should Have Been Me vs Gunther at WrestleMania XL.’”

WWE veteran Sheamus has had a Hall of Fame–worthy career filled with championships, brutal brawls, and unforgettable rivalries. But despite all the success, the Celtic Warrior admits there’s one moment that still eats away at him—missing out on a dream WrestleMania clash with Gunther.

After their brutal five-star war at Clash at the Castle 2022, Sheamus was determined to run it back on the grandest stage of them all. Fans and critics hailed their first showdown as one of the most hard-hitting matches of the modern era, and Sheamus saw WrestleMania XL as the perfect stage for the sequel.

Unfortunately, fate had other plans.

Sheamus’ Heartbreaking Admission

Speaking on the Insight with Chris Van Vliet podcast, Sheamus revealed just how much the missed bout still haunts him:

“I pushed for that match so hard. I was like, ‘This is the hill I’m going to die on.’ That’s the one regret I have—it should have been me and him at WrestleMania.”

A serious neck injury sidelined Sheamus at the worst possible time, leaving him unable to compete. He even admitted that in another timeline, he might have rushed back at the Royal Rumble just to set up the rematch.

Gunther’s Rise To Untouchable Status

While Sheamus sat out, Gunther’s stock skyrocketed. The Ring General not only became the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in history but also went on to win the 2024 King of the Ring and capture the World Heavyweight Championship twice.

Every step of Gunther’s dominance made Sheamus’ missed opportunity sting even more. What could have been an all-time WrestleMania classic became the biggest “what if” of Sheamus’ career.

A Rivalry That Deserved a Grand Finale

Their Clash at the Castle match is still considered one of the best WWE bouts of the past decade, a true showcase of toughness, pride, and storytelling. Fans believed WrestleMania XL should have been the stage for their brutal rivalry’s conclusion.

Instead, Sheamus is left with one lingering regret—a match that never was but still lives in the imagination of wrestling fans everywhere
