WWE Almost Pulled the Trigger on a Shocking CM Punk Victory at WrestleMania 42 Before Changing Everything
When Roman Reigns hit that second Spear and pinned CM Punk in the main event of WrestleMania 42, it felt like a predictable but powerful moment. The new World Heavyweight Champion walked out, and the WWE universe assumed that was always the plan.
But it turns out, we were this close to seeing a completely different ending.
According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE officials did more than just consider an alternate finish. They actively discussed a scenario where CM Punk would have walked out of WrestleMania still holding the title. Yes, you read that right. The original conversation involved Punk retaining on the biggest stage of them all, only to drop the belt to Reigns later at Backlash.
That would have set up a revenge-driven Roman Reigns heading into the summer. A totally different vibe, right?

So why did they change it? According to the report, WWE ultimately decided that putting the title on Reigns at WrestleMania was the safer, smarter move to protect Punk’s standing in the company. They didn’t want Punk to suffer a straight loss at Backlash after a major win, so they flipped the script entirely.
Since the big win, Reigns has been keeping busy. He appeared on the post-WrestleMania edition of RAW, where Jacob Fatu made his intentions crystal clear. Fatu wants that championship, and he’s not being subtle about it. Reigns also addressed his own schedule, hinting that fans will see plenty of him throughout the summer.
That said, don’t hold your breath for an official title match announcement just yet. As of now, there is no confirmed bout between Roman Reigns and GUNTHER, nor has anything been signed with Jacob Fatu. But with both men circling, the Tribal Chief’s reign might already be in danger.
