Why WWE’s Reported Interest In David Finlay Isn’t What You Think
The rumor mill is working overtime trying to figure out where one of the most polished stars of the modern era lands next. Following his departure from New Japan Pro-Wrestling earlier this month, David Finlay has officially hit the open market, and while the speculation is running wild, the reality of his situation with WWE might surprise you.
Finlay’s current chapter with NJPW closed on February 10 at the New Beginning in Osaka, where he was defeated by Callum Newman. While that was the end of his contract, it was just the starting gun for the frenzy surrounding his future.
Reports indicate that there has been some level of conversation between Finlay and WWE. However, digging a little deeper reveals that this isn’t a done deal or even close to it. Those with knowledge of the situation describe the talks as extremely preliminary. Essentially, WWE is keeping its ear to the ground, but there are no creative plans being drawn up for him at this stage. It sounds more like a “keep in touch” situation than a full-court press.

But if you think this is a straight shoot between the “WWE or bust” narrative, think again. The race for Finlay’s signature is shaping up to be a three-way dance.
NJPW isn’t ready to let go of the former IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion. They are actively working on a deal to keep him in the fold, hoping to retain the leader of the War Dogs. Meanwhile, the All Elite Wrestling chatter is getting louder by the minute. Given that AEW is practically a reunion tour for former Bullet Club members these days—with guys like Clark Connors already there—the possibility of Finlay showing up to either lead a new charge or settle old scores is a very juicy prospect for fans.
Having called New Japan home since 2015, Finlay has evolved into a complete package. He’s not just a name; he’s got the in-ring credibility and the edge that makes him a fit for any locker room. American fans got a taste of what he can do back in 2022 when he faced “Hangman” Adam Page during the Forbidden Door crossover.
Right now, Finlay is holding a pretty strong hand. He’s got a former employer that wants him back, a global juggernaut kicking the tires, and a direct competitor loaded with his old friends and rivals. For the moment, the ball is firmly in his court as the industry waits to see which door the “War Dogs” leader decides to kick down.
