WWE Star Gunther Drops a Bombshell: American Wrestlers Are ‘Softer’ Than Europeans
Most WWE fans know Gunther as “The Ring General,” a dominating force who has battled the company’s toughest competitors. But after years of brutal matches, the former World Champion is sharing a controversial opinion that is shaking up the wrestling world.
In a candid interview on the Club 520 podcast, Gunther didn’t hold back when discussing the major difference between US-born talent and European-born talent inside the ring.
According to the Austrian superstar, there is a clear gap in physicality. He says the way European wrestlers are trained creates a harder, more resilient athlete compared to their American counterparts.
“Yeah, I think physicality-wise, I would say Sheamus,” Gunther said, naming one of the few who truly pushed him. “He really pushed me. And it’s mostly, I’ve got to be honest… I would say most of the American guys are a bit softer than the European.”

Gunther was quick to clarify that he is not trying to insult anyone. Instead, he points to a fundamental difference in training philosophy. He explained that European wrestlers are often beaten up by their trainers for an entire year just to get them used to the pain. It is a rugged style that builds a specific kind of toughness.
“It’s not in a negative way, style-wise,” he added. “We just got used to our trainers beating us up for the first year in training. It’s a different style over here.”
The comments have already started a firestorm of debate among wrestling fans. Some agree that the European style, often seen in promotions like wXw and PROGRESS, is more hard-hitting. Others argue that the modern American style focuses more on athleticism and storytelling rather than pure punishment.
Regardless of where fans stand, Gunther has once again proven why he is one of the most compelling and brutally honest figures in WWE today. He doesn’t care if you cheer or boo him. He only cares about one thing: proving that his way is the toughest way.
Do you agree with The Ring General, or is he way off base?
