Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods Broke Their Silence and It Is Not What Fans Expected

If you thought the sudden exits of Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods were just another round of WWE budget cuts, think again. The truth behind the New Day’s stunning departure is nothing like what fans expected.

Over the weekend, wrestling world was turned upside down when it was announced that both Kingston and Woods were leaving the company—ending Kofi’s incredible nearly 20-year run and Woods’ 16-year tenure. But here is where the story takes a sharp turn.

According to Bryan Alvarez, this was not a firing. It was a walkout.

Sources confirm that WWE approached the popular tag team legends about restructuring their contracts. The deal they had signed in 2025 would have kept them with the company through 2030. But instead of honoring those terms, WWE came back asking them to take a significant pay cut.

Kingston and Woods said no.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer backed up that version of events, adding that the two stars simply “did not accept the pay cut and left on their own.” In other words, they chose their pride over a paycheck—and WWE granted them their release.

Meltzer also dropped a bombshell, claiming that for Kingston and Woods, “it was time to leave probably two years ago.” That suggests the writing has been on the wall for a while, especially after the emotional 2024 breakup with Big E, who was forced into retirement due to a neck injury.

So what comes next? For now, the former champions are sitting out a 90-day non-compete clause. But here is the silver lining—Meltzer notes their situation is different from other roster cuts. In about three months, they will be free agents, free to land anywhere they want.

The New Day closes one of the most legendary chapters in WWE history with 13 tag team championship wins, trailing only the Dudley Boyz. But if this exit proved anything, it is that even legends know when to bet on themselves.
